Farm 2 Fork event to focus on food access

The Delaware and New Castle Historical Societies are hosting their 3rdannual Farm 2 Fork event this weekend in Old New Castle.

Delaware Historical Society’s Katie McDade says the event pairs contemporary food issues with its historical context.

“And this year we’re having three sessions: so an afternoon family friendly session, as well as two sessions in the late afternoon, early evening," McDade said.

McDade says the family friendly session from 1 to 3 p.m. will be a sort of backyard expo addressing issues of food access and urban gardening.

Organizations like Brae’s Brown Bags, Southbridge Youth Farm and the Planting Hope Urban Farm will be on hand with educational games, activities and plants for sale. They’ll accept food donations for admission, and are particularly looking for items the Food Bank of Delaware needs, like:

“Whole grain pasta, canned or dried beans, peanut butter, canned tuna, salmon or chicken, canned vegetables, 100% juice, canned fruits, hot and cold cereals, healthy snacks…." McDade said.

They’re also taking monetary donations. And McDade said the suggestions - $1.25, $5 or $7 – have an extra meaning. According to the World Bank, over a billion people in developing countries live on only $1.25 a day or less.

$5 is the average cost of a fast food meal per person, and $7 is what the USDA calculates the average food cost per person per day is according to a moderate plan for a family of four.

The monetary donations will go towards events participating and working to bring healthy food to First State residents.

For adults, there will be a hard cider making class later in the day – covering the entire process from apple to bottle.

New Castle Historical Society’s Executive Director will lead another evening session – including whisky tastings and a discussion of field to glass whiskeys.
