The University of Delaware football team tries to regroup after its head coach Dave Brock was fired Sunday.
UD Athletic Director Christine Rawak says Sunday’s decision to fire Brock was the “toughest of her career.”
It came after Saturday’s 24-17 loss at William and Mary - the Blue Hens 4th straight loss after starting the season 2-0.
But Rawak wouldn’t call wins and losses or any other factor the primary reason for letting Brock go after compiling a 19-22 record in 3½ seasons with no NCAA playoff appearances.
"It is a complex decision. There isn’t one thing that pushed me any one way. It was a comprehensive review and evaluation," said Rawak.
Rawak also defended the timing of the decision.
I think timing is never easy," said Rawak. "I think was what clear to me was that a change was needed and I didn’t feel like it was in the best interest of the program, or honestly fair to Coach [Brock] to wait much longer."
Co-Defensive Coordinator Dennis Dottin-Carter takes over as interim head coach. He concedes this change is not an easy one for Hen players to absorb.
They were a little surprised yesterday [and] hurt," said Dottin-Carter. "But all the position coaches, myself – we’ve had contact with all the players. We’ve been with them, trying to be here for them and let them know they can speak with us. And I believe we’re moving forward in the right direction."
The Blue Hens host Stony Brook this Saturday.
Meanwhile, Rawak says she’ll take the next week or so to talk to people – including the players - about what kind of coach UD should be looking for before launching a national search for Brock’s successor.
