Sunday is Father’s Day, and in honor of the holiday, we bring you the story of Wilmington resident Bruce Schweiger. Schweiger has struggled with a heart condition since the 1970s, and in 2011 he got a new heart through the Gift of Life donor program.

Delaware Public Media’s Anne Hoffman spoke with Schweiger about what will be his fourth Father’s Day post-transplant.

Among his reflections is on a a special Father’s Day trip to Rehoboth Beach he and his family made in 2011 to celebrate his trabnsplant, even though he was still in recovery.

"Before the transplant, that winter before, my granddaughter was at the house, the four year old. And uh, I was sort of just sitting out there, we were playing outside in the snow and all of a sudden she took off running down the street. And I’m just hollering for somebody, you know, “Stop her! Stop her!” because there was no way I could even, the cold air and all that," he said.

Now Schweiger says he can keep up with even his fastest grandkids.
