Jimmie Johnson walked away a winner again on the Monster Mile, capturing Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup “FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks” at Dover International Speedway.
The victory pushes Johnson’s record for career wins at the track to 10 and makes him one of only five Sprint Cup drivers ever to win 10 times at a single track.
Johnson and the 48 car didn’t get the lead until just 23 laps remained, then survived three race restarts – including a green-white-checkered-flag finish to make it to victory lane.
“It all came together for us very late in the race, but once we had our opportunity, we took advantage of it and got our 10th win here,” said Johnson.
The win is also his series-best his fourth this season and the 74th of his career.
The six time Sprint Cup champ says he knows he and his team have struggled at times in qualifying, but seem to have what it takes when its time to race.
“Come Sunday, I feel like we’ve been racing really well," said Johnson. "I think our cars have been more friendly to drive than what we had last year. I haven’t been on the knife edge racing through traffic in different scenarios. So, I feel like we’ve been racing good.”
Johnson moved up two spots in this year’s points standings with the victory and is now third.
Points leader Kevin Harvick finished second on Sunday and Kyle Larson third.
The race featured 15 lead changes, with nine different drivers holding the top spot at some point. There were also a total of seven cautions for 40 laps Sunday.
