Delaware to launch full sports betting Tuesday

Delaware Public Media

It appears Delaware will become the first state to rollout full-scale sports betting following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision earlier this month striking down a federal ban on it.

Gov. John Carney’s office announced Thursday the state’s three racetrack casinos will start offering a full menu of sports betting starting this Tuesday, June 5th at 1:30.

“Delaware has all necessary legal and regulatory authority to move forward with a full-scale sports gaming operation, and we look forward to next week’s launch,” said Carney in a statement. “We’re hopeful that this will bring even more visitors into Delaware to see firsthand what our state has to offer.”

The state says that means single-game and championship wagers on pro baseball, football, hockey, basketball, soccer, golf, and auto racing.  Delaware had previously been limited to parlay bets on pro football under its narrow exemption to the federal betting ban

Employees at Delaware Park, Dover Downs and Harrington Raceway’s casinos were trained to handle the gambling expansion over the past week and half.   And the state has posted a guide to full sports wagering on the Delaware Lottery website.

Other states, including neighboring New Jersey and Pennsylvania, are rushing to join Delaware.  But the First State had already passed legislation to allow full sports betting and has sports betting infrastructure in place from its parlay betting operation – allowing it to move more quickly.
