Delaware Public Media

The Fourth of July weekend was a busy one on the roads in the First State.

DelDOT reports 648,583 cars passed through the state’s three major toll plazas – the Newark plaza on I-95 and the Route 1 tolls at Biddle’s Corner and Dover – between Friday and Sunday.

That’s an increase from 637,028 a year ago during the same three-day period.

Newark Plaza was the busiest of the toll plazas – with 305,374 vehicles logged there over the holiday weekend

DelDOT estimates that $2.1 million was collected in tolls during the three-day weekend.  Last year, DelDOT reported $2.4 million was collected during a four-day holiday weekend.

DelDOT also notes that over 60 percent of the trips counted over the weekend used E-ZPass
