Arts Playlist: 'Holiday Magic at Brandywine'

The wonder of the holiday season is already underway at the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

This year’s holiday show is titled Holiday Magic at Brandywine.

Holiday Magic at Brandywine opened on October 31, 2020 and runs through January 10, 2021, featuring the Brandywine Railroad.

“Trains have been a part of holiday traditions here at the Brandywine since 1972, said Paul Hoerner, a model train specialist at the Museum. "And my partner Dave and myself - he’s been here since 1979 and I've been here since 1987 - setting up the holiday exhibit every year so that generations of Brandywine Valley residents can come here and enjoy watching the trains running around our little miniature village.”

Hoerner says the display will be a little different this year due to COVID-19.

“We broke up the very large layout into two sections and will have two little separate standalones of that layout," said Hoerner. "And we also brought in Nicky Wyeth’s (son of the renowned American artist, Andrew Wyeth) standard gauge train layout which is 8 X 12 feet and for the first time an N-scale layout that was jointly owned by Jamie Wyeth (another son of Andrew Wyeth) and Andy Warhol and it’s 4 X 6.”

Hoerner says there are four standalone train layouts with a total of 14 trains running at the same time.

Hoerner notes the show also includes the museum’s Critter ornaments and the return of artist and composer Ann Wyeth McCoy’s dollhouse, featuring six rooms filled with three-dozen dolls and hundreds of miniature objects.

He adds that to ensure the visitors remain safe and still have an enjoyable experience the museum is implementing a variety of COVID-19 procedures, including timed ticketing and capacity limits.
