The State Senate Wednesday confirmed a pair of high profile nominations by Gov. Jack Markell (D-Delaware).
Senators approved long-time corporate lawyer Karen Valihura to fill a vacancy on the Delaware Supreme Court. She replaces Justice Jack Jacobs, who officially stepped down this week.
"Today’s vote reflects the extraordinary skill Karen has demonstrated as an accomplished member of Delaware’s legal community," said Markell in a statement. "Her intellect, experience, and thoughtful approach to the law make her an ideal person to help continue our state’s tradition of judicial excellence."
The 51-year-old Valihura, a Republican, becomes only the second woman ever to serve on Delaware’s highest court. The first, Carolyn Berger, announced she will retire in September. Berger tied her departure to her perception that she was not taken seriously as a candidate for Chief Justice earlier this year.
Valihura will be sworn in in the next 30 days.
Senate lawmakers also okayed Markell’s choice of David Small to take over as DNREC Secretary.
Small will replace Collin O’Mara, who leaves next week to become president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation.
“David’s career has been marked by an unwavering commitment to making Delaware safer, cleaner and healthier. Today’s vote affirms the strong relationships he has built working with our legislature, Delaware’s environmental community, and other leaders across our state," said Markell in a statement. "I’m thrilled he will continue his service as our secretary and I look forward to our work together on issues affecting the quality of life of all Delawarean
Small has worked for DNREC since 1987 – the last 13 years as deputy secretary for the past 13 years.
