Sigler resigns as Delaware Republican Party chairman

The head of the Delaware Republican Party has abruptly resigned.

John Sigler – who was re-elected to a new term as state party chairman in April – told party officials Wednesday morning he’s stepping down effective immediately.

In a letter to the state party’s executive committee, Sigler cited “newly emergent and totally unexpected circumstances that are completely beyond my control” as the reason he is leaving.

The party’s executive director, John Fluharty, said he is “stunned and saddened” of the resignation, calling Sigler “one of the finest men I have ever met.”

Fluharty also praised Sigler's work since taking over the party's chairmanship after the 2010 election.

"Under his leadership the State Party was able to retire its debt from the 2010 election and position itself for the 2014 cycle to continue to elect candidates to the legislature who support strengthening Delaware's economy, job creation and low taxes," said Fuharty. "John Sigler worked tirelessly to improve the relationship between Republicans in the legislature and the State Party through issue development and increased communication. He will be missed."

The party’s newly elected vice chair, Nelly Jordan, will take Sigler’s place until a special convention is held to elect a new party chairman.

Delaware House Republican leadership reacted with brief statements.

“I was surprised by John’s announcement," said House Minority Leader Danny Short (R-Seaford). "I wish him the best and thank him for his service in what can often be a difficult and challenging position.”

“A special convention will need to be held within the next 60 days to choose the state party’s next chairman," added House Minority Whip Deborah Hudson (R-Fairthorne). "I look forward to watching that process unfold and I’m eager to see who steps forward for consideration.”
