Premiums for Affordable Care Act insurance plans in Delaware will rise 3 percent next year.

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware is asking to raise rates for next year’s Affordable Care Act insurance plans.

It’s hoping to win approval for a 5.7 percent premium hike.

Delawareans who are covered by Affordable Care Act will pay 25 percent higher premiums next year. It’s the third rate hike in the First State since insurance exchanges started in 2014.


The Congressional Budget Office says healthcare premiums could rise by 20 percent next year if President Trump’s administration cuts off certain Obamacare subsidies.

This comes as the Delaware Department of Insurance says it’s still reviewing Highmark’s proposed 2018 rate hike.

Auto insurance companies would no longer be able to use a person’s age, credit score, marital status and other factors when calculating someone’s premiums under a new bill being considered by the General Assembly.

Delaware is one of only six states (including New Hampshire, West Virginia, Michigan, Iowa and Illinois) using the Affordable Care Act’s state-partnership model to offer Obamacare health insurance coverage.   

 

That could be good news for Delawareans if the ACA is repealed.
