Unemployment in Delaware dips below national rate

Delaware Public Media

The unemployment rate in Delaware is lower than the national rate for the first time in almost a year and a half.

In June, unemployment rose in the United States from 3.8% to 4% while the rate in Delaware dropped from four to 3.9%, according to survey data.

However, the same data suggests Delaware’s Labor Force Participation Rate is only at about 62.5% and experts say the First State’s aging population plays a factor.

In the last decade, the population of residents 65 years or older in Delaware has increased at three times the rate of those at prime working age.

This indicates the number of residents who are not working but are available for work is limited.

Delaware’s all-time low unemployment rate is 3.0%, a mark nine states were below as of May.
