Third Delawarean this year contracts West Nile Virus

Mosquitoes are continuing to spread West Nile Virus in Delaware.

Public Health Officials have confirmed a third case of West Nile in a human this year, and are awaiting lab results on a suspected fourth case.

The virus has been found in a Sussex County man and two New Castle County men. All patients have been 60 years or older.

The latest patient is a 73-year-old New Castle County man. He was hospitalized late last month.

Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay said in a statement, “We are extremely concerned about this situation and are urging people to use insect repellent whenever you go out.”

She adds the peak transmission period for West Nile Virus lasts for another six weeks.

Last week the Department of Agriculture announced two Kent County horses had contracted West Nile, and DNREC officials have reported an uptick in West Nile found in wild birds and sentinel chickens.
