Steamy temps keep Delaware State Fair attendance down

Delaware Public Media

The Delaware State Fair didn’t fare too well under the blazing sun this year.

Attendance was down 15 percent from last year.

Delaware State Fair General Manager Danny Aguilar said last year’s fair had the second highest attendance on record, with temperatures around the mid-80’s almost every day. This year, temperatures exceeded 100 degrees seven out of ten days.

“You know it was a disappointment. Weather is one of those things where you can plan a great event but Mother Nature may have different plans,” Aguilar said.

But the fair still drew sizable crowds despite the heat. More than 260,000 people showed up over 10 days, which should rank this year’s fair in the top 10 most attended.

Aguilar said the numbers picked up on the final two days, once temperatures began to drop.

He said most fairgoers arrived later in the evenings as temperatures began to cool.
