School is starting - motorists need to "Give Kids A Brake"

Indian River School District

Delaware’s Department of Transportation wants motorists to be aware that the 2018-2019 school year is getting underway

DelDOT is using an initiative called “Give Kids A Brake” to get divers’ attention.

The agency’s deputy director of community relations Pam Lilly says DelDOT has posted message boards throughout the First State to drive the point home.

“And we just want motorists to be extra cautious out there. We have students walking along the roadways, we have them riding their bikes, we have them waiting at bus stops and at their end of their driveways. And we just want motorists to be extra cautious in looking out for those buses and for our students out there,” Lilly said.

Lilly says DelDOT also wants to point out Delaware law requires drivers traveling in either direction on a two-lane road to stop when a school bus puts its lights on to pick up kids.

Drivers traveling in the same direction as a school bus on a four-lane road must also stop for pick-ups. Drivers traveling in the opposite direction on a four-lane road are NOT required to stop.

Failure to do so could result in a $230 fine for a first offense and up to $575 for the second offense. You can also have your license suspended for 1 to 12 months.
