Rt 13 to I-295 southbound ramp closing this week

Delaware Public Media

A major ramp in near Wilmington, commonly referred to as the Hospital Ramp, is shutting down starting Tuesday.

The Delaware River and Bay Authority says the ramp from Route 13 southbound to I-295 southbound will be closed to all traffic for two weeks.

“The ramp is going to be reconstructed as part of the I-295 southbound project that’s been continuing for the past few years,” said DRBA public information officer Jim Salmon.

He said the closure should not be too much of a headache for commuters.

“We’ve established a detour program. Motorists should continue on U.S. Route 13 southbound to the left lane, make a U-turn at a temporary signal that’s been established and head back under the I-295 southbound overpasses and onto Route 13 northbound,” Salmon said.

Salmon says from there, there’s a new ramp that’s been constructed heading northbound onto I-295 southbound.

Mumford and Miller Concrete, Inc. of Middletown is handling the ramp reconstruction.  The price tag is $34 million.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by December.  When finished, DRBA will have invested more than $90 million in its work to revamp I-295 approaching the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
