Mountains and beaches offer escape in Mezzanine Gallery show

"Morning Light on the River Grand Canyon" by Meinrad Leckie, 2016, oil on canvas, 30” x 40”";s:

Painter Meinrad Leckie captures the vast openness of the American West and the brightness of Caribbean beaches in his new show Recent Landscapes at the Mezzanine Gallery in Wilmington.

From canvas to canvas you can jump from canyons in Colorado all the way to the soft sands of the Caribbean. And if those locales seem a bit different, Wilmington painter Meinrad Leckie agrees.

"I go from extremes, being out West with high desert (and ) the heat, to going down to bathing suits, walking on beaches and sailing."

The artist said he gets inspired when he travels outside of Delaware.

"You go 10 minutes in any direction (in Delaware) and you’re on a highway or in a major city. I wanted that openness of the desert, the colors, the browns, the reds."

The show features 14 large oil landscapes of mountain vistas, deep valleys and colorful boats resting on shore.

Recent Landscapes is on display at the Mezzanine Gallery in the Carvel State Building in Wilmington through August 25.
