Food Bank of Delaware looking for more CANgineering participants

Delaware organizations are being encouraged to build structures out of cans in an effort to alleviate hunger in the First State.

The Food Bank of Delaware says Friday is the deadline to register for the 6th Annual CANgineering competition.

“CANgineering is our annual competition where companies, schools, other organizations, build structures out of food, whether it’s out of cans or boxes. Over the past couple of years, organizations have been really creative. So we’re really looking forward to seeing the creations this year,” said Kim Turner, spokeswoman for the Food Bank of Delaware.

Turner says past creations include Mr. Celery from the Wilmington Blue Rocks, built by JPMorgan Chase employees and a piece of pie constructed by Capital One.

“I don’t think there has been any weird ones. But last year Chase did Mr Celery from the Wilmington Blue Rocks; one year Capital One did a piece of pie. The kids at school, they really do a great job; we don’t want anybody to to discouraged from participating,” said Turner.

Turner says after the holiday season, donations to the Food Bank are down during the spring and summer months. She says CANgineering is a creative way to collect much needed food and create a spirited competition in Delaware’s business and education communities.

Organizations have until Friday to register for the food drive and structure-building contest. Judging takes place on April 23rd and 24th.

Winners will be announced on April 28th.
