DHSS issues warning after Sussex County overdose uptick

State health officials say more than half of the overdose deaths in the state this month have occurred in Sussex County.

Since the start of the month, seven of the 12 overdose deaths in the First State have been in Sussex County.

Sussex only accounted for about 18% of the total deaths from overdoses in Delaware last year.

Though toxicology reports are yet to come back, officials say, it is clear the substances being used in Sussex are dangerous and urge all people in active opioid use to be sure they have access to the overdose antidote Naloxone.

A little less than two-thirds of the overdose deaths in Delaware last year involved fentanyl.

Fentanyl works fast to affect the brain and nervous system and often requires two doses of Naloxone to save someone’s life from an overdose.

People who call 911 to report an overdose cannot be arrested for low-level drug crimes under the Good Samaritan Law.
