DelDOT plans to expand stretch of Rt 13 in Camden

Kelli Steele

By 2021, a three-mile stretch of Route 13 through Camden, could become a six-lane highway.

If you’ve ever driven on Route 13 between the Puncheon Run Connector  and Walmart, you know how bad traffic is, especially during morning and evening rush hour.

DelDOT wants to change that.

“Over the past decade or so we’ve seen a lot of growth in the southern Dover area, in Camden-Wyoming and as a result we’re seeing more traffic on Route 13, especially during the morning and evening rush. So a few years back we undertook a study to look at how we can make the road safer and increase capacity," said C.R. McLeod - communications director for DelDOT.

He says his agency now has plans to expand the highway by one lane in each direction - north and south- making it a six-lane highway.

“From a safety standpoint, we think eliminating some of the crossover’s in that area and increasing the road capacity will make the road ultimately safer,” McLeod said.

McLeod says it will probably be 2021 before ground is broken on the project, at a price tag of an estimated $66 million.

He says several hundred accidents have been reported on this stretch of highway in recent years.

Two weeks ago, the agency held a public meeting regarding its plans. McLeod says the agency got a lot of positive feedback from residents living and working along that stretch of highway.

He says another public meeting will be held as the start of the project draws closer.
