The Red Clay School District will open the new school year looking for new superintendent.
Merv Daugherty announced Thursday he's leaving for another job out-of-state.
He will stay with the district until November 1st.
“I thank Dr. Daugherty for his service and appreciate all he’s donefor the district,” said Red Clay School Board President Catherine Thompson in a statement. “Dr. Daugherty has worked hard to make Red Clay the preeminent district in the state. The board recognizes the importance of moving swiftly to determine the path forward for obtaining a successor superintendent who will continue Red Clay's innovation and success as a district.”
Daugherty has led the state’s largest district for the past nine years. Before that he was the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Academics.
“I am extremely thankful for this opportunity and I am very grateful to the outstanding staff members and the school board members for their professionalism and dedication to serve students and families,” said Daugherty in a statement. “Through the next two months, I will continue to work hard for the students, parents and staff of the district. Each day will be extremely important for me to see the district continue to move forward and provide a smooth transition.”
The district’s board will meet August 28th to discuss naming an interim superintendent and the process for selecting Daugherty’s successor, ncluding hiring a search firm.
Including its charter schools, Red Clay serves more than 16,000 students in 15 elementary schools, six middle schools, five high schools, and three special education schools. It has a budget of just over $265 million and employs about 11 hundred teachers.
