DART riders can now pay on their mobile phone

People can now pay for a ride on the DART bus using their mobile phone.

Through a new feature on the DelDOT app, riders can now purchase anywhere from a single ride to a 30-Day pass for the bus service.

The DART pass can be accessed through transit icon on the app, where bus riders are now able set up a credit account to buy anything from a single ride to a 30-Day pass. The rider then shows the bus operator the purchase was made upon boarding.

Transit Corporation CEO John Sisson calls the new payment method more convenient and says he thinks it will speed up boarding times and make the whole process more efficient.

“It gets you moving really quick. Maybe less than five seconds compared to twenty, thirty seconds, maybe more if someone is struggling to put a dollar bill in our fare box,” said Sisson.

The state launched a pilot program for the feature last summer, and Sisson says it proved popular among senior citizens.

He adds mobile payment will help the agency collect data to learn more about the travel patterns of DART riders.

“That will just help us understand a little bit more about the travel patterns of our customers without getting into their personal information,” said Sisson.

The DelDOT app is free to download on IOS or Android.
