Concerts, food, rides and fun - it all happens at the 2018 Delaware State Fair kicking off in Harrington this Thursday.

The 2018 Delaware State Fair kicks off in Harrington this Thursday. And you can get in for free during “Food Lion Feeds Hunger Relief Day” Monday, July 23rd.

Hunger Relief Day at the State Fair is a partnership between the Fair, Food Lion and the Food Bank of Delaware.

“It’s a great day for people to come out to the Fair, because if they bring five Food Lion-brand canned or boxed goods, they will receive one free admission to the Fair,” said Kim Turner, communicationsdirector for the Food Bank.

She says this is the 7th year that Hunger Relief Day has been held.

“So we’re hoping that we’ll bring in more than 25,000 pounds of food. So it really is a big day for us. Traditionally, food drive donations drop over the summer months. So it’s a great way for us to bring in donations during a typically slow time of year,” Turner said.

Turner says donations received through the effort assist families in Kent and Sussex Counties struggling to put food on their table.

More than 43,000 residents of those two counties are currently considered food insecure, meaning their access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources.

To get free Fair admission Monday, July 23rd, each family member must bring five Food Lion-brand canned goods. For example, if you have 3 family members, you must bring at least 15 items. And keep in mind, no items in glass containers will be accepted.
